Asian Communities in New Zealand
The Asian Communities are some of the most significant, and fastest gowing, of all communities in New Zealand
- The Asian population has increased by almost 50% over the last 20 years.
- With approx 60% of all Asian migrants settling in Auckland, this region has seen the most diversification.
- The Asian population is expected to grow at 3.4% p.a. through to 2026
- While a number of this population were born in New Zealand, high levels of migration have contributed extensively to this growth and with migration, has come an influx of new cultures, attitudes, languages, customs and beliefs, increasing reliance on the Ethnic Media companies.
Traditionally, most New Zealanders considered "Asian" to mean those communities originating from China, Korea, and Japan. However, this perception is changing, as the Asian communties comprise of those peoples from Japan in the East, through to India and Pakistan in the west. With such a wide spread of nationalitites and cultures, much care needs to be taken to ensure that the correct media channels are selected, and the message is delivered in the best form possible, in a manner acceptable to that community - often meaning that each community has its own campaign.
The below table gives an idea of the size of the various Asian ethnic groups as of the 2006 census:
